From before the time of Christ up until the late 1800s there was no resource more vital to the world’s navies and commercial fleets than cannabis hemp. Nearly all the sails during this time were made from this exceptionally strong and decay-resistant fiber, as was virtually all the rigging, cargo nets, anchor ropes, shrouds, flags, sealants, and sailor’s clothing.

Each of Columbus’s ships carried over 80 tons of hemp products.
