Hempelopes

Hempelopes

Text on back of envelope:

Because of its extremely high cellulose content, industrial hemp (cannabis sativa) is an excellent crop from which to make ethanol and methanol fuels. These fuels allow more complete combustion of hydrocarbons than petroleum fuels, and they provide higher octane than gasoline while producing less carbon dioxide. Additionally, hemp produces enough oxygen throughout the growing season to counterbalance all the carbon dioxide it will later put into the atmosphere when burned as fuel.

The Ford Motor Company operated a biomass fuel conversion plant at Iron Mountain in the 1930s that utilized hemp cellulose. Ford also produced an experimental car whose body was made from hemp-based plastic. In addition to being stronger and more dent resistant than the standard steel bodies of the time, the car also was one-third lighter which resulted in better fuel mileage. But Henry ford had to abandon his dream to “grow automobiles from the soil,” and power them with hemp fuel when the Marijuana Tax Act was passed in 1937.
